This #floridabeautyvariegata is thriving in its Naked Root pot! I’ve had this sitting in here for about a month and it’s already put out 2 leaves and the roots are already emerging through. This plant is so resilient and grows so fast!

My TC's leaves were starting to get yellow and brown tips and I think it was because it was drying out super-fast. So I repotted it into a Naked Root planter with some fresh soil so the roots can get better air flow and to give the plant some more nutrients :)

After two weeks, I have a beautiful new leaf, and another on the way, and is it just me or does my plant just look bigger and healthier overall!? I’d say she’s very happy in this planter.

How is Naked Root different from other self-watering planters?
Most self-watering planters rely on a water reservoir that slowly feeds moisture to the plant from the bottom up, which can leave the soil wet for too long and starve the roots of oxygen - risking root rot.
Naked Root is different. Our planters are designed to breathe, allowing water to reach all the roots (not just the bottom ones) and ensuring they stay oxygenated and healthy.
Once the water is absorbed, fresh oxygen flows in, replicating the natural water-oxygen exchange that happens in nature, keeping your plants happy and thriving.
Does soil fall out of the aeration slots?
A little, at first. When you repot your plant into the Naked Root planter, a small amount of soil may fall through the aeration slots during the first few waterings.
But don’t worry - after that, the soil will settle and stay in place. Just give the outer pot a quick rinse if needed.
How often do I need to water my plant?
For most indoor houseplants, you’ll only need to water about every two weeks. Just fill up the reservoir, and the Naked Root planter takes care of the rest!
Some plants, like succulents, might need even less frequent watering. For specific plant watering tips, check out our easy guide here.
Will the plant suffer from dry soil?
Not at all! Naked Root planters are designed to wick water efficiently to the roots while allowing them to breathe. After lots of testing, we’ve found the perfect balance - your plants get just the right amount of water and oxygen, keeping them healthy for weeks at a time.
What is "air root pruning"?
Air root pruning is a natural process where roots stop growing once they reach the air. When this happens, the root sends out lots of tiny, hair-like roots, increasing the surface area and allowing the plant to absorb even more nutrients and water.
This helps your plant grow stronger and healthier - Naked Root is the only planter that harnesses this process to create the ideal growing environment for your plants.
Why is oxygen so important for roots?
Roots, even though they're underground, need oxygen to thrive! In nature, roots constantly exchange water and oxygen through small air pockets in the soil.
Lack of oxygen leads to root rot (also known as anaerobic disease), where the plant essentially drowns. Naked Root’s design ensures your plants get the oxygen they need to grow stronger and faster.
Will roots grow through the aeration slots?
Nope! Thanks to air root pruning, roots will stop growing when they reach the air and will branch out inside the planter instead. This leads to a healthier, denser root system. Some roots might poke through the bottom slots due to less oxygen there, but you can simply trim them if needed.
If the air is particularly humid, some roots might grow through the side slots. In that case, you can either move the pot to a drier area or trim the roots as needed.
Why am I getting fungus gnats?
Fungus gnats are attracted to houseplants for a few reasons:
- Overwatering: They love damp soil, so be sure to let the soil dry out between waterings.
- Organic matter: Soil rich in organic material, like peat moss, is a food source for them.
- Poor drainage: Water sitting at the bottom of the pot keeps the soil moist, attracting gnats.
- Humidity: High indoor humidity can create an inviting environment for them.
- Infested soil: Occasionally, the soil you bring home might already contain gnat eggs or larvae.
To avoid fungus gnats, use well-draining soil and allow the soil to dry out between waterings.
How long can I grow a plant in the Naked Root planter before transplanting?
Theoretically, forever! The plant will never get root bound, but as the roots grow, they’ll need more frequent watering. If you're happy with its size, it will behave a bit like bonsai, staying compact but healthy.
Is Naked Root safe if I’m growing food?
Absolutely! All Naked Root products are BPA-free and dishwasher-safe, making them perfect for growing your own food.
Is Naked Root a good planter for any plant?
Yes, every plant benefits from oxygen at the roots. Naked Root is designed to work with all types of plants, giving them the perfect balance of water and air to thrive.
